The Friends of the Semel Institute is a volunteer support group for the renowned Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA, one of the world’s leading centers for the study of the mind, brain, and behavior.


The Friends sponsors and produces The Open Mind, a lecture and film series  that brings together thought leaders in science and culture to present educational programs about mental health issues as a free public service to the community. Through its Scholar Program, The Friends supports translational research being done by the next generation of brilliant scientists to both unlock the secrets of the mind and brain, and develop new and innovative treatments to improve the lives of the millions of people who live with a mental illness or disorder.

Open Mind is a community film and lecture series that is open to the public at no charge on the UCLA campus. The Friends’ bring together scientists, researchers, clinicians, authors and filmmakers to discuss issues that pertain to illnesses of the mind and brain.
